About Me

Hello, my name’s Nicolas Hauka and I’m a broadcast journalism student at BCIT. From an early age I’ve spent many hours playing and watching sports, falling in love with hockey and football. I grew up listening to the likes of Gord Miller, Jim Hughson, Gus Johnson and so many more talented announcers. I was instantly drawn to how these individuals-built excitement into sports broadcasts for viewers at home. Their enthusiasm inspired me to pursue becoming a play-by-play specialist and dreaming of captivating audiences just like them, with my own style.

As a young adult, I discovered a love of writing. Whether it’s sports, local news, or anything impacting the community, I love being able to articulate to the public what’s happening in the world.

I’ve been playing and Coaching football since I was 12 and through that time, I’ve acquired a vast knowledge of how the game works from a mental and technical perspective. At the age of 19, I was named junior varsity head coach at Sullivan Heights Secondary in Surrey, making me one of the youngest head coaches in B.C. high school football history. Coaching has given me the ability to teach difficult concepts in a simple, straightforward manner to all different kinds of learners. I believe the skills and knowledge I’ve acquired through coaching, will set me apart when it comes to writing detailed breakdowns of teams and stories, because I’ll be able to give some additional insight others may not be able to convey. I’m currently in the process of creating my own podcast that offers more in-depth football and hockey analysis.  I want to explore each sport and shed light on why individual players may be excelling or struggling in an entertaining and engaging way — stay tuned.
